The house is situated in the quiet hills above a beautiful stretch of the River Dordogne. The river itself is 5 k away. There are beaches and shallow bathing areas suitable for small children. There is parking at the river's edge, with shady picnic areas with tables etc. Canoes and bicycles can be hired nearby. Fishing is good and species include trout and barbel.

The very pretty village of Carlux is 3.5k away. There is an excellent boulangerie as well as a butchers shop and a general store. There is also a main Post Office and a Restaurant/bar, which has a terrace.

There is unlimited walking available in the beautiful country surrounding the house. The GR6 runs nearby. This is part of the system of pathways, which run through the whole of France, passing through spectacular countryside not seen from the road. It is permitted to use bicycles and horses on these routes. In some places offroading with 4x4 vehicles is allowed. A GR guide is available from the tourist office at St. Julien de Lampon, (5k)

Numerous excellent restaurants are within easy reach of Simeyrols. Traditional cuisine for the area is simple and superb, featuring the produce for which the area is famous, foie gras, duck, walnuts, and truffles, although all other types of food are usually to be found on the menu. Prices can be surprisingly low. The wines of Bordeaux, Bergerac, and Cahors are wonderful and very inexpensive.

Sarlat: The medieval town of Sarlat is 13k away. The old part of the town is world famous for it's restored buildings. It is the second most popular town in the world for period film sets. The cathedral is very impressive with a huge carved wooden pipe organ mounted above the main door. During the season there are street entertainments at night with some very original performers, wonderful for children. A day spent in Sarlat is an unforgettable experience.

Rocamadour: 30 - 40 mins. drive. The ancient place of pilgrimage built onto the sheer cliff of a ravine with the home of the Knights Templar at the top. Absolutely spectacular, with stunning views.

Domme: 30 mins. drive. The beautiful old fortified bastide town sitting high on a rock. Totally impregnable for hundreds of years. Visit the huge cave system beneath the town, which has strong links with the Resistance in the last war. A fascinating history and unmatched views over the Dordogne valley.

Lascaux: About 40 mins. drive. Renowned for its prehistoric cave paintings. One of many such sites in the area, known as The Cradle of Mankind.

Collange La Rouge: 40-50 mins. drive. A complete village built in red stone. Now uninhabited, but fully restored with artisan shops and other exhibits. Unbelievably pretty.

St. Cirque la Popie: About an hour and a half. Officially one of the top three prettiest villages in France' certainly the most photographed.

Quercyland: Near Souillac. 20 mins. drive. Water park fun for the whole family.

Aquarium Le Bugue: One of the best in S.W. France. Some huge fish.

These are only samples of the very many attractions in this area, many of them right on our doorstep. There are caves, castles, chateaux, rivers and wonderful old towns and villages to explore. It would take a lifetime of holidays to see them all.
