The house itself is a few minutes walk to the Vienne river. On the river, international fishing competitions take place, but the novice angler is just as welcome! The river is also home to many water sports & leisure activities: Canoeing, boating, swimming, hire of pedaloes, wind surfing to name but a few. You can even bungee jump off the viaduct at L'Isle Jourdain into the river, if you are feeling brave! More locally in Availles you will find an open air swimming pool, pony trekking, crazy golf, 4 x 4 track, tourist office, shops and restaurants amongst other things.
The department of the Vienne has set out sign posted walks around the countryside, with the flexibility to make them last a couple of hours or days. If you prefer something a bit more strenuous, then it is also a superb area for cycling with varied terrain and quiet roads.

If it is 'theme parks' or similar ideas you require, the region boasts a fair few. Monkey Valley is well worth a visit - a safari park, but with no cars! You walk through a well laid out park, amongst various types of monkeys. Thankfully, the gorillas are in an enclosed area! On this theme there is also Snake Island, Eagle castle or Sheep Village to spend your days. If animals are not your cup of tea, then there is the internationally renowned Futuroscope, a futuristic park of the evolution of images.
Nearby is a motor racing circuit. If you are not keen on motor sports you would not know it was there, but for the sign posting around the area. However for enthusiasts, throughout the season there is racing of all kinds, from motorbikes to sports cars, single seaters, and classics. Next to the circuit is a fun cart track (a cross between a go cart & a car) for those who are secret Michael Shumachers!

Also worth a visit are the towns/cities of Confolens - a medieval town with its week long music festival each August; Montmorillon - celebrated for art & literature; Poitiers - walled city; Oradour sur Glane - a poignant memorial to show the atrocities that went on there during the 2nd World War; Charroux - not quite Pisa, but the abbey has quite a tilt; Lussac - caves to see with early dwellers' paintings. Around the area are an abundance of chateaux, abbeys, museums and archaeological places of interest. Just take a drive around, all the local villages are so pretty and varied -a piece of advice 'just go & get lost!!' Please don't take offence. It's the best way to see places you might not normally see.
If all this seems a bit too active, then the house is equipped with garden furniture to lounge outside when it is warm, or you can just relax in the house. The choice is yours!
