ABOUT THE AREA
Our home and the gite are located within walking distance of the village of Chey on the D950 in the Deux Sevres department. The village has a small convince shop, patisserie and restaurant/bar. Chenay (3 mins drive) also has a small shop and a restaurant (Logis de France)
The nearest towns are Lezay (10 mins drive) and Melle (15mins drive). Traditional French markets are held in both towns on separate days. There is a variety of restaurants supermarkets, (each town has one open on a Sunday) banks with cash dispensers and post offices.
Both towns have tourist offices supplying local information and details of attractions further afield e.g.. Futuroscope and Marais Pontevin.
Both Melle and Lezay have open-air swimming pools and Melle has an indoor pool as well. Be warned – both pools ONLY allow swimming trunks for boys and men – NO shorts.!
There is a lake (plan d’eau) at Lambon with swimming, canoes, picnic/play area is 20 mins drive. There is another at Sauze Vaussais.
We are about one hour’s drive from the Atlantic coast with its sandy beaches and historic town of La Rochelle with the Ile de Re and Ile d’Oleron beyond. 40 mins drive from Poiriers and Futuroscope theme park based on the moving image – the buildings alone are worth a visit!.
Th Marais Poitevin or Green Venice (1 Hour drive is an area full of canals with picturesque houses and cycle paths. Cycles and flat-bottomed canal boats are available for hire. For those wishing to venture further Angouleme, Limoges, Saints and Cognac are all accessible.
